About Us

“We know and care about each child….”

St. Matthew’s is a very special place. It provides an exceptional start to your child’s education. Founded in 1867 the school is an integral part of the community in Downside village, Cobham, and is situated in an idyllic location opposite the village green. We take great delight in being part of local projects and community events.

As a small school, the sense of family at St. Matthew’s ensures that each child feels worthwhile and is known well by all the staff. We have a strong partnership with parents and welcome their participation in school activities.

We believe that children thrive in a happy, stimulating and exciting environment. Praise, encouragement and fun in these vital early years of their education allow every child a fulfilling and positive school experience.

Our curriculum (click here) has a strong focus on literacy, numeracy and science – and is underpinned by our key drivers: spiritual and moral values, enterprise and environment.

I am very proud to be the Headteacher at St. Matthew’s, and I hope you will visit us to see our special qualities first hand. The school consistently produces impressive academic results but just as importantly, it provides pupils with a strong foundation for a happy and successful future.

Rhian Thornton, Headteacher
